Movie Night

Really guys? I got fewer comments than ever before on my post asking for delurking. Oh well. Maybe I have fewer unknowns than I thought.

Now back to your regularly scheduled blog post.

Movie Night. Hubby and I went out to a movie tonight. We actually go to the movie theater quite a bit. In fact, the other night I was filling out an online survey about movies and I was asked how many movies I saw in the theater in 2009 and I guessed 20. This morning for fun I looked through all the movies released in 2009 (I know, I'm a dork) and made a list of exactly 20 that we had seen in the theater. Nice guess! There's just something about going to movies rather than renting that I really like. Ok, it's the popcorn. I can't lie. I could eat a bathtub full of movie theater popcorn, complete with fake butter topping. And that is exactly why we only get a medium, because otherwise I would eat the whole large or even extra large. Hubby always pushes for the bigger size but the funny thing is that he eats the same amount regardless so guess who keeps eating the rest of it? Yeah, that would be me. He always wants to take home the leftovers but I am physically incapable of leaving popcorn uneaten by the end of the movie.

But tonight I had a complaint. I knew my movie watching experience was going to be compromised shortly after we chose our seats. We were probably the third group into the theater so we had our pick of seats. And then the others started filing in, packing the entire upper level. And I groaned inwardly as I saw more and more of the same demographic. These people always ruin my movie experience. Always.

Couples with young children, you might be guessing? No. Them I can handle. Pack them in, they're much quieter than the folks I'm talking about. And I know from experience, I saw Up in a theater. No, I am talking about old people. Retirees if you will. I have noticed if there is any Oscar buzz about a movie (we saw Up in the Air) the old people will show up in droves. And of course we were at a matinee, safely before their bedtimes. Older people are so annoying at movies! They gasp and "mm-hmm" about everything! And that is just the beginning. I swear to you that I have never, I repeat NEVER, been with this type of crowd without the older woman next to me leaning over to her husband and telling him EVERYTHING that is about to happen. We are all watching! We all have guessed what will happen next! SHUT UP AND LET ME ENJOY THE MOVIE!

And by the way, your old lady perfume smells terrible and you have too much on.

Rant completed.

  1. Forget old people, I hate the people who answer their cell phones, really? Who answers their phone at the movies? I didn't pay $9 bucks to hear you talk, asshole! :)

  2. Haha you just described my mom!! :) She's not quite retiree-age yet but I'll be damned if she doesn't talk throughout the ENTIRE movie. It's embarrassing. I can hardly stand to go to the movies with her because I know what's coming. No one every really tells her shhhh except me, who she just ignores. Just once I wish someone else would tell her to shut the hell up!! :)

  3. hormonal much? :)

I find myself more severely ticked off by things that otherwise I'd probably let slide off before.

    This post made me smile.

    How was the film?

  4. My husband is obsessed with popcorn at the theater. He would eat and entire extra large container by himself :-). I hate being annoyed and distracted at the movies, esp since it cost so much. Hope you had a great weekend.

  5. My family and I went to this same movie on the day after christmas and my sister almost killed the older lady behind her because she kept kicking her chair. I tried to rationalize it as restless leg syndrome, but then the old lady behind me wouldn't shut up, and I vowed no more matinees!

  7. I feel bad about laughing at this. We went to see Lord of the Rings with my FIL. Big Mistake! He couldn't hear half the movie and then missed everything because he was asking questions the whole time. It was funny to me. The rest of the people almost killed him.

At least the old people can't text!

  8. You crack me up! Things like this always seem to happen to us...invaribly we'll sit near the most annoying people in the theater. Always. We just have that kind of luck! :)

Oh, and BTW...I was out of town when you wrote your "delurkifying" post, so I missed that until today but I'm PROUD to say that I lurk here often. ;P

Hope you're having a good week!

  10. I absolutely LOVE going to see a movie - my husband on the other hand hates it. He apparently attracts jerks and they always seem to sit behind him and kick his seat the entire 2 hrs. But I have to admit, if I had a popcorn machine like they do at the theater, I'd be much happier at home watching said movie. I'm addicted to popcorn. When I drive the 2hrs each way to see my dr, I stop at this great gourmet popcorn shop and get my 3 gallon tin refilled for $3! It's a real deal :)

  11. My DH and I used to love to go to the theater. I miss it. Those are my fav date nights. What movie did you see?
I've never had a problem with retirees, mine has always been teens.
